If I ever run across fanfiction that has Sam Spade with a goose sidekick, I know who to blame.

Also, gunsel was slang for the younger partner of a homosexual relationship. Spade used it to describe Welmer's relationship with Gutman in the book.

Exactly. And some people mistook it for referring to the word gun (gunsel=hired gun).
